Alethea Ballard fell in love with sewing at the age of ten and has been making quilts ever since. Being a Bay Area resident, she lives in fabric store heaven and gets her inspirations from the incredible textile choices now available. This gives her a fabulous palette to work from when the whimsy of a new idea strikes her.
Alethea's working style is a culmination of her impatience with convention, her spontaneity and her artistic sensibility. She is influenced by the art nouveau style and by the movement, color and passion of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings. She prefers to work quickly and spontaneously using simple images and playing with the clear, bright colors she loves.
As both a quilt teacher and middle school Home Economics teacher, Alethea loves to convey her ideas, artistic visions, and passions to a variety of ages and skill levels.
With a recent purchase of a long-arm quilting machine, she began to design and create quilts that were bigger, bolder, and quirkier than ever before. Now she finds herself ready to bust out and be a true quilt maverick.
